Cigarette makers were workers at the Royal Tobacco Factory in Madrid's Lavapiés district. When their work was undermined by the introduction of machinery, by ever-longer working hours and by ever-increasing production demands in the face of ever-lower wages, they took to the streets, staging numerous riots and strikes, becoming pioneers of the workers' struggle.
